Beretta just introduced their new 92X family of pistols and Jim Tarr was lucky enough to get a peek at them before the public rollout. The 92X Performance was introduced at the NRA Annual Meetings and Convention this past April, but that all-steel dedicated competition pistol is only a small part of the story. Think of the new 92X family, you'll have your choice of the full-size, slightly smaller Centurion, or the 92X Compact, as a product-improved version of the Beretta 92 that's been long overdue.
Beretta 92X Compact The 92X offers all of the upgrades Beretta has made over the years to various, or that Beretta 92 lovers have asked for, all in one place. Except for the recoil spring guide rod, there are no polymer parts inside the 92X. The pistols offer extended magazine releases, dovetailed hi-visibility front sights and improved rear sights, beveled magazine wells, "D" hammer springs for improved trigger pulls, and the ability to switch from a safety to just a decocker.
Beretta 92X Centurion Two things stand out for us on the new models: grips and magazines. You'll note all of the 92X pistols have the flat Vertec backstrap. Don't like that? Beretta includes wraparound grips which simulate the profile of the standard 92 backstrap. The grips are polymer but feel like G10 and are very aggressively textured. As for magazines, Beretta is going with the product-improved magazines from Mec-Gar. So the full-size and Centurion 92X models will ship with 17-round magazines, and the Compact will ship with 15-round magazines.
One more thing, the Compact is likely to be the choice for concealed carry, and you'll have the option of a Compact 92X with or without tactical frame rail. Suggested retail on all models except the 92 X Performance is $899 with a tactical rail or $800 without.
